Appomattox County, Virginia

Appomattox County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 13,705 inhabitants and a population density of 16 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Appomattox. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

Appomattox County is located near the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 867 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Buckingham County, Prince Edward County, Charlotte County, Campbell County, Amherst County, and Nelson County.

History

Made it in 1845 from parts of Buckingham County, Campbell County, Charlotte County and Prince Edward County. On April 9, 1865, here the Confederate General Robert Edward Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant met with their troops to surrender at Appomattox Courthouse.
