Culpeper County, Virginia

Culpeper County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States and is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. In the 2000 census, the county had 34 262 inhabitants and a population density of 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Culpeper.

Geography

Culpeper County is located north-northeast of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 990 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Fauquier County, Stafford County, Spotsylvania County, Orange County, Madison County, and Rappahannock County.

History

Made it in 1749 from parts of Orange County. It was named after Lord Thomas Colepeper. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Cedar Mountain took place here on August 9, 1862 instead, as on 9 June 1863, the Battle of Brandy Station.
