Powhatan County, Virginia
Powhatan County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 22 377 inhabitants and a population density of 33 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Powhatan.
Powhatan County is located just east of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 680 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Goochland County, Chesterfield County, Amelia County and Cumberland County.
Made it was in 1777 from parts of Cumberland County and Chesterfield County. It was named after the chief, Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas.
According to the census of 2000, there were 22 377 people in Powhatan County. Of these, 2,479 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 7,258 households and 5,900 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 81.50 percent White, 16.91 percent Black or African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, and 0.33 percent from other races; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.82 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,258 households out of which 37.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 69.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, 18.7 percent were non-families, 14.6 percent of all households and 4.8 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.03.
Based on the county the population was spread out 24.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 34.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 8.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 122.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 126.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 53,992, and the median income for a family was $ 58,142. Males had a median income of $ 37,948, women $ 28,204. The per capita income was $ 24,104. 5.7 percent of the population and 4.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 7.9 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.6 percent of those 65 years.
