Highland County (Virginia)
Highland County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 2,536 inhabitants and a population density of 2 people per square kilometer. Thus, it is of the population produces the smallest county in Virginia. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Monterey. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Highland County is in the northwest of Virginia, is bordered to the north and west by West Virginia and has an area of 1077 square kilometers without significant water surface. Highland County is divided into three administrative districts: Bluegrass, Monterey and Stonewall. It is bordered to the south by Augusta County and Bath County.
Highland County was formed in 1847 from parts of Bath County. The Battle of McDowell took place here on May 8, 1862 held during the American Civil War as part of Major General Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah campaign in 1862.
According to the census in 2000 lived in Highland County 2,536 people in 1,131 households and 764 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.3 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.4 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.5 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,131 households out of which 24.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers, 32.4 percent were non-families, 29.1 percent of all households and 15.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.74 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread from 19.9 percent population under 18 years, 4.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 31.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 20.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 29,732, and the median income for a family was $ 37,530. Males had a median income of $ 25,904, women $ 19,250. The per capita income was $ 15,976. 9.3 percent of families and 12.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 13.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 15.8 percent of the population aged 65 years.
