Charles City County, Virginia
Charles City County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 6926 inhabitants and a population density of 15 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat), Charles City.
Charles City County is located in east-central Virginia and has an area of 529 square kilometers, of which 56 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: New Kent County, James City County, Prince George County, Chesterfield County and Henrico County.
Made it in 1634 as an original county. The still used, but refurbished, Courthouse was built in 1750-1760. It is thus one of the five courthouses in the United States, which was built before the Revolutionary War and continuously served as a court.
According to the census of 2000, lived in Charles City County 6,926 people in 2,670 households and 1,975 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 35.66 percent White, 54.85 percent Black or African American, 7.84 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, and 0.17 percent from other races; 1.37 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.65 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,670 households out of which 27.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.6 percent were married couples living together, 15.2 percent were single mothers, 26.0 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent of all households and 8.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.02.
Based on the county the population was spread from 22.1 percent population under 18 years, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 28.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 42,745, and the median income for a family was $ 49,361. Males have a median income of $ 32,402, women $ 26,000. The per capita income was $ 19,182. 10.6 percent of the population and 8.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 13.0 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 18.5 percent of those 65 years.
