Russell County (Virginia)
Russell County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 30 308 inhabitants and a population density of 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lebanon. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Russell County is located almost in the extreme southwest of Virginia, is in the northwest about 35 miles from Kentucky, located in the south about 20 miles from Tennessee and has an area of 1235 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Tazewell County, Smyth County, Washington County, Scott County, Wise County, Dickenson County and Buchanan County.
Made it in 1786 from parts of Washington County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 30 308 people in Russell County. Of these, 1,490 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 11,789 households and 8,818 families. The population density was 25 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.07 percent White, 3.08 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, and 0.28 percent from other races; 0.40 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,789 households out of which 31.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, 25.2 percent were non-families, 23.1 percent of all households and 10.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.87.
Based on the county the population was spread from 21.2 percent population under 18 years, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 103.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 26,834, and the median income for a family was $ 31,491. Males have a median income of $ 26,950, women $ 20,108. The per capita income was $ 14,863. 13.0 percent of families and 16.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 21.3 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 16.9 percent of residents aged 65 years or older.
