Roanoke County is a county of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 85 778 inhabitants and a population density of 132 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Roanoke.
Roanoke County is located in southwest Virginia, is located in the southwest about 30 miles from West Virginia and has an area of 650 square kilometers without significant water surface. The County is divided into five administrative regions: Catawba, Cave Spring, Hollins, Vinton and Windsor Hills. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Botetourt County, Bedford County, Franklin County, Floyd County, Montgomery County and Craig County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 85 778 people in Roanoke County. Of these, 2,256 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants living in 34 686 households and 24 696 families. The population density was 132 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.63 percent White, 3.35 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 1.61 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.39 percent from other races groups; 0.89 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 34 686 households out of which 30.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 25.1 percent of all households and 10.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.88.
Based on the county the population was spread from 22.7 percent population under 18 years, 6.6 per cent between 18 and 24 years, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.9 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 47,689, and the median income for a family was $ 56,450. Males have a median income of $ 39,126, women $ 26,690. The per capita income was $ 24,637. 2.7 percent of families and 4.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Among them were 5.2 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 4.9 percent of residents aged 65 years or older.
