Craig County (Virginia)
Craig County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 5091 inhabitants and a population density of 6 people per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is New Castle. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Craig County is located in western Virginia, adjacent to West Virginia and has an area of 856 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Alleghany County, Botetourt County, Roanoke County, Montgomery County and Giles County.
Made it in 1851 from parts of Botetourt County, Giles County and Roanoke County.
According to the United States Census 2000, there were 5,091 people in Craig County in 2,060 households and 1,507 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.94 percent White, 0.20 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, and 0.14 percent from other races; 0.35 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.33 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,060 households out of which 30.8 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers, 26.8 percent were non-families, 23.9 percent of all households and 10.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.88.
Based on the county the population was spread from 23.6 percent population under 18 years, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.6 percent were 65 years old or older.
