Madison County (Virginia)
Madison County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 12,520 inhabitants and a population density of 15 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Madison.
Madison County is located in north-central Virginia, adjacent to the and has an area of 833 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Rappahannock County, Culpeper County, Orange County, Greene County and Page County.
According to the census in 2000, lived in Madison County 12,520 people in 4,739 households and 3,521 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.71 percent White, 11.41 percent Black or African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.50 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.29 percent from other races groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.77 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,739 households out of which 30.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, 25.7 percent were non-families, 21.8 percent of all households and 9.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.03.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.1 percent population under 18 years, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.0 percent were 65 years old or older. Of these, 12.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 10.2 percent of those 65 years.
