Clarke County (Virginia)
Clarke County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 12,652 inhabitants and a population density of 28 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Berryville.
Clarke County is located almost in the extreme north of Virginia, adjacent to West Virginia and has an area of 462 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Loudoun County, Fauquier County, Warren County and Frederick County.
According to the census in 2000, lived in Clarke County 12,652 people in 4,942 households and 3,513 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 91.15 percent White, 6.73 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.49 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.55 percent from other races groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.46 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,942 households out of which 29.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, 28.9 percent were non-families, 24.1 percent of all households and 9.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97.
Based on the county the population was spread from 23.4 percent population under 18 years, 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 51,601, and the median income for a family was $ 59,750. Males have a median income of $ 40,254, women $ 30,165. The per capita income was $ 24,844. 4.2 percent of families and 6.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 7.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 11.1 percent of those 65 years.
