Charlotte County (Virginia)

Charlotte County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 12,475 inhabitants and a population density of 10 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Charlotte Court House. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

Charlotte County is located in southern Virginia, with its southern tip about 20 km from North Carolina and has an area of 1237 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Prince Edward County, Lunenburg County, Mecklenburg County, Halifax County, Campbell County and Appomattox County.

The southern boundary of the Halifax County forms the Roanoke River ( also called Staunton River ), which in the John H. Kerr Reservoir flows in the southeastern part of the Charlotte counties.

History

Made it was in 1765 from parts of Lunenburg County. It was named after Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg- Strelitz, the wife of George III. , King of Great Britain.

Southeast of Brockneal is the historic Red Hill House. It was recorded with the number 78003012 on 14 February 1978 by the National Register of Historic Places.
