Charlotte County (Virginia)
Charlotte County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 12,475 inhabitants and a population density of 10 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Charlotte Court House. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Charlotte County is located in southern Virginia, with its southern tip about 20 km from North Carolina and has an area of 1237 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Prince Edward County, Lunenburg County, Mecklenburg County, Halifax County, Campbell County and Appomattox County.
The southern boundary of the Halifax County forms the Roanoke River ( also called Staunton River ), which in the John H. Kerr Reservoir flows in the southeastern part of the Charlotte counties.
Made it was in 1765 from parts of Lunenburg County. It was named after Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg- Strelitz, the wife of George III. , King of Great Britain.
Southeast of Brockneal is the historic Red Hill House. It was recorded with the number 78003012 on 14 February 1978 by the National Register of Historic Places.
According to the census of 2000, lived in Charlotte County 12,472 people in 4,951 households and 3,435 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 65.51 percent White, 32.89 percent Black or African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, and 0.70 percent from other races; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.65 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,951 households out of which 28.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.0 percent were single mothers, 30.6 percent were non-families, 27.4 percent of all households and 13.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.3 percent population under 18 years, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 28,929, and the median income for a family was $ 34,830. Males have a median income of $ 26,918, women $ 20,307. The per capita income was $ 14,717. 12.7 percent of families and 18.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 22.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 20.8 percent of those 65 years.
