Scott County (Virginia)
Scott County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 23,403 inhabitants and a population density of 17 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Gate City. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Scott County is located almost in the extreme southwest of Virginia, on the south by Tennessee, is located in the northwest about 20 miles from Kentucky and has an area of 1395 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Russell County, Washington County, Lee County and Wise County.
Made it in 1814 from parts of Lee County, Russell County and Washington County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 23,403 people in Scott County. Of these, 343 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 9,795 households and 7,023 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.51 percent White, 0.59 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.15 percent from other races groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.42 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,795 households out of which 27.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers, 28.3 percent were non-families, 26.1 percent of all households and 13.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.82 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread from 20.6 percent population under 18 years, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 27,339, and the median income for a family was $ 33,163. Males have a median income of $ 28,328, women $ 20,553. The per capita income was $ 15,073. 13.0 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 20.1 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 20.5 percent of residents aged 65 years or older.
