Nottoway County, Virginia
Nottoway County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 15,725 inhabitants and a population density of 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Nottoway.
Nottoway County is just southeast of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 819 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Amelia County, Dinwiddie County, Brunswick County, Lunenburg County and Cunmberland County.
Made it in 1789 from parts of Amelia County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 15,725 people in Nottoway County. Of these, 1,656 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,664 households and 3,885 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 57.16 percent White, 40.56 percent Black or African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.01 percent from other races groups; 0.72 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,664 households out of which 29.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.6 percent were married couples living together, 15.4 percent were single mothers, 31.4 percent were non-families, 27.6 percent of all households and 14.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
Based on the county the population was spread from 22.9 percent population under 18 years, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 106.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 106.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,866, and the median income for a family was $ 39,625. Males have a median income of $ 28,533, women $ 19,718. The per capita income was $ 15,552. 15.5 percent of families and 20.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 18.4 percent of those 65 years.
