Gloucester County (Virginia)
Gloucester County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 34 780 inhabitants and a population density of 62 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Gloucester.
Gloucester County is located in Eastern Virginia, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 746 square kilometers, of which 185 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Middlesex County, Mathews County, York County, James City County and King and Queen County.
Made it was in 1651 from parts of York County. It was named after Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of Charles I, King of England, Scotland and Ireland and his wife Henrietta Maria Bourbon, daughter of the French king Henry IV and Maria de Medici.
According to the census in 2000 lived in Gloucester County 34 780 people in 13,127 households and 9,884 families. The population density was 62 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.68 percent White, 10.31 percent Black or African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.69 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.40 percent from other races groups; 1.45 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.61 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,127 households out of which 35.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, 24.7 percent were non-families, 20.3 percent of all households and 8.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.02.
Based on the county the population was spread out 26.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 11.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 45,421, and the median income for a family was $ 51,426. Males have a median income of $ 35,838, women $ 24,325. The per capita income was $ 19,990. 6.8 percent of families and 7.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 9.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.5 percent of those 65 years.
