Gloucester County (Virginia)

Gloucester County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 34 780 inhabitants and a population density of 62 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Gloucester.

Geography

Gloucester County is located in Eastern Virginia, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 746 square kilometers, of which 185 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Middlesex County, Mathews County, York County, James City County and King and Queen County.

History

Made it was in 1651 from parts of York County. It was named after Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of Charles I, King of England, Scotland and Ireland and his wife Henrietta Maria Bourbon, daughter of the French king Henry IV and Maria de Medici.
