Smyth County, Virginia

Smyth County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 33 081 inhabitants and a population density of 28 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Marion. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

Smyth County is located in southwest Virginia; it is with its southern tip about 20 km from North Carolina about 5 miles from Tennessee, in the southeast and has an area of 1,171 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bland County, Wythe County, Grayson County, Washington County, Russell County and Tazewell County.

History

Made it in 1832 from parts of Washington County and Wythe County. It was named after Alexander Smyth, a general in the American Revolutionary War from 1812 to 1815, Senator, Member of the House of Representatives and a member of the U.S. Congress.
