Smyth County, Virginia
Smyth County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 33 081 inhabitants and a population density of 28 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Marion. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Smyth County is located in southwest Virginia; it is with its southern tip about 20 km from North Carolina about 5 miles from Tennessee, in the southeast and has an area of 1,171 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bland County, Wythe County, Grayson County, Washington County, Russell County and Tazewell County.
Made it in 1832 from parts of Washington County and Wythe County. It was named after Alexander Smyth, a general in the American Revolutionary War from 1812 to 1815, Senator, Member of the House of Representatives and a member of the U.S. Congress.
According to the census of 2000, there were 33 081 people in Smyth County. Of these, 1,085 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 13,493 households and 9,607 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.86 percent White, 1.87 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, and 0.32 percent from other races; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.86 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,493 households out of which 29.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 26.0 percent of all households and 12.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.83.
Based on the county the population was spread from 21.6 percent population under 18 years, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 16.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 30,083, and the median income for a family was $ 36,392. Males have a median income of $ 26,698, women $ 19,712. The per capita income was $ 16,105. 9.9 percent of families and 13.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 15.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 14.0 percent of residents aged 65 years or older.
