Lunenburg County (Virginia)

Lunenburg County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 13,146 inhabitants and a population density of 12 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lunenburg. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

Lunenburg County is located in southern Virginia and has an area of 1120 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Nottoway County, Brunswick County, Mecklenburg County, Charlotte County and Prince Edward County.

History

Made it was in 1746 from parts of Brunswick County. It was named after the Duchy of Brunswick -Lüneburg in Germany as some of the British kings from the House of Hanover came and the title of Duke of Brunswick- Lunenburg contributed.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,146 people in the Lunenburg County. Of these, 1,191 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,998 households and 3,383 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was from 59.12 percent White, 38.58 percent Black or African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.75 percent from other races, together. 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,998 households out of which 27.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers, 32.3 percent were non-families, 28.7 percent of all households and 14.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91.

Based on the county the population was spread from 21.3 percent population under 18 years, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 16.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 113.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 115.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,899, and the median income for a family was $ 34,302. Males had a median income of $ 26,496, women $ 20,237. The per capita income was $ 14,951. 14.9 percent of families and 20.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 27.3 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 22.8 percent of the population aged 65 years.
