Rockbridge County, Virginia

Rockbridge County is a county in Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County of 20,808 inhabitants and a population density of 13 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lexington.

Geography

Rockbridge County is located in western Virginia, is located approximately 35 miles from West Virginia and has an area of 1557 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Augusta County, Nelson County, Amherst County, Bedford County, Botetourt County, Alleghany County and Bath County. The independent cities of Lexington and Buena Vista form enclaves in Rockbridge County.

History

Made it was in 1778 from parts of Augusta County and Botetourt County. It got its name due to the Natural Bridge, a natural rock bridge over the Cedar Creek. This is referred to in the U.S. as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
