Buchanan County (Virginia)
Buchanan County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 26 978 inhabitants and a population density of 21 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Grundy. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Buchanan County is located almost in the far west of Virginia, is bordered on the north by West Virginia, on the west by Kentucky and has an area of 1305 square kilometers without significant water surface. The County is divided into seven administrative districts: Garden, Hurricane, Knox, North Grundy, Prater, Skirt Lick, and South Grundy. It borders in Virginia clockwise to the following counties: Tazewell County, Russell County, and Dickenson County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 26 978 people in Buchanan County. Of these, 1,205 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 10,464 households and 7,900 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.75 percent White, 2.62 percent African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, and 0.10 percent from other races; 0.33 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,464 households out of which 30.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent of all households and 9.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.87.
