Beatrice Mintz

Beatrice Mintz ( born January 24, 1921 in New York City ) is an American geneticist, embryologist and cancer researcher.

Life

Mintz acquired in 1941 at Hunter College in New York City a bachelor in 1944 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and a master's in 1946 a Ph.D. just there. Between 1946 and 1960 she was a professor of biology at the University of Chicago before (later Fox Chase Cancer Center ) moved to Philadelphia at the Institute for Cancer Research. Since 1965, she had also a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, also in Philadelphia.

Work

Mintz developed methods to merge embryos of mice of different genetic lineage and thus to generate chimeras. By introducing of viral DNA into the genome, they produced the first transgenic mice. Mintz was able to show that certain tumor cells in early mouse embryos ( blastocysts ) are introduced, lose their malignant behavior. Mintz was the first time to bring pluripotent stem cells in cell culture. She developed the first animal model for malignant melanoma.
