Beaufort is a city in the state of South Carolina in the United States and the county seat of Beaufort County. The city was founded in 1711 and is considered to Charleston as the second oldest city in South Carolina.

Geography

The city is located on Port Royal Iceland, an island in the Port Royal Sound on the Atlantic coast of South Carolina.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000), the city had 12,950 inhabitants on a land area of 48.2 km ². The median age was 30.1 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income englisch ) amounted to (national average of the United States: 21,587 U.S. dollars) at 20,501 U.S. dollars. 13.0 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4 %). Approximately 13 % of the inhabitants are of German descent.

Beaufort is known a popular holiday venue for numerous films and for an impressive harbor on the Sound. In the village is the military training facility Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Iceland of the U.S. Marine Corps.
