Bellcaire d'Empordà

The Spanish site Bellcaire d' Empordà belongs to the district of Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona (Catalonia ). North of Bellcaire d' Empordà the small town located south Albons town of Torroella de Montgrí.

Like most places in the Empordà region, Bellcaire d' Empordà is located on a small hill. Before the 18th century, the region of lakes and marshes were covered. Middle of the 18th century, the lakes were drained to create farmland.

Geography

Bellcaire d' Empordà lies on the road GI -632, north runs the highway C -31.

The landscape is predominantly flat and agricultural. At the highest point of the town is the medieval castle that was built in the 13th century by the Counts of Empúries.

History

The region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The various architectural styles of the Romanesque church of San Joan de Bellcaire are proof that the place existed in early Christian, Romanesque and Gothic periods.

Attractions

Castell de Bellcaire: Fortress and Castle of the Counts of Empúries from the 13th century. The building is now used by the local council, as a parish church for various events.

Church of Sant Joan de Bellcaire: Romanesque church from the 11th century with various architectural styles dating back to the early Christian period.
