Benny Morton

Benny Morton ( born January 31, 1907 in New York City, New York, † December 28, 1985 ) was a (big band ) jazz trombonist of Swing.

Morton had his first engagement in 1923 in the band of Clarence Holiday ( the father of Billie Holiday ) in Harlem, during the day he attended school. He played from 1927 to 1929 and from 1931 to 1932 with Fletcher Henderson, Don Redman in 1932 to 1937 and then to 1939 at Count Basie. During this time he accompanied with other Basie musicians also some Billie Holiday recordings. In addition, Morton played in the bands of Chick Webb and Raymond Scott. In the 1940s he played in small combos with Teddy Wilson (from 1940), Joe Sullivan and Edmond Hall ( from 1943 ), all in the Café Society club ( the big bands had ceased touring during the war ). By 1946, he had his own band. He played in Broadway orchestras ( so two years in Jamaica with Lena Horne ) and from 1959 in the orchestra of the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. In addition, however, he was also in jazz recordings, for example, to listen to Buck Clayton and Ruby Braff. In the 1960s he joined inter alia, with Bobby Hackett and Wild Bill Davison, and in the 1970s with The World's Greatest Jazz Band, toured with The Top Brass ( with Bob Brookmeyer, Maynard Ferguson, Clark Terry, Doc Cheatham ) and the Saints and Sinners along with Bud Freeman, Bob Wilber and Yank Lawson.
