Benzoyl

A benzoyl group is referred to in the organic chemistry, the radical C6H5 -(C = O) -, which is composed of the phenyl group and the carbonyl group, and therefore corresponds to the benzoic acid without the hydroxy group. It is thus an acyl group. Is abbreviated Bz benzoyl. Preferably, however, the use of COPh or the like, to avoid confusion with similar abbreviations of the benzyl group, " Bn ", and " Bzl ".

Benzoyl groups can be introduced into alcohols, phenols and amines with the aid of benzoyl chloride ( benzoylation by the Schotten-Baumann method or Unicorn in pyridine).
