Bermudo I. ( † about 797 in Oviedo, also called Vermudo I. ) was from 788 to September 791 King of Asturias.

Bermudo was the son of Fruela Pérez, the brother of King Alfonso I, and brother of the former king Aurelio ( 768-774 ). For his collection to the king an act of choice is attested. He had been consecrated a deacon before his accession to the throne, was therefore intended for an ecclesiastical career. As he belonged to the clergy, his throne was canonically invalid. That's why he renounced ( the Chronicle of Alfonso III. According ) after three years voluntarily to the royal dignity, and lived after the abdication of several years. In research, however, has been hypothesized that the resignation was not voluntary but was due to a loss against the Muslims in the Battle of Burbia. Already he had 790 Alfonso II designated successor and raised apparently as co-regent. After his abdication the following year Alfons autocrat was.
