Bernard Joseph Flanagan

Bernard Joseph Flanagan (born 31 March 1908 in Proctor, Vermont, USA, † 28 January 1998) was Bishop of Worcester.

Life

Bernard Joseph Flanagan received on 8 December 1931, the sacrament of Holy Orders for the Diocese of Burlington.

On September 1, 1953, he was named by Pope Pius XII. the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Norwich. The Bishop of Burlington, Edward Francis Ryan, donated to him on November 30th of the same year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Raleigh, Vincent Stanislaus Waters, and the Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Louis, John Patrick Cody.

Pope John XXIII. appointed him on 8 August 1959, Bishop of Worcester. The inauguration followed on 24 September of the same year.

Flanagan attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as part of a Council Father.

On 31 March 1983, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related.
