Bert Muhly

Louis Bert Muhly ( born June 18, 1923 in Maryland; † 16 December 2011 ) was an American politician (Democrat ), lecturer, and social activist.

Life

Muhly studied at the University of California, Berkeley in 1948 and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He continued his studies and obtained in 1952 at the Department of City and Regional Planning his master's degree. Muhly has now been active in the community planning. Among others he was three years Director of Planning for the Tulare County, two years working for an engineering firm and was subsequently head of the planning department of Santa Cruz County. After many years in this position Muhly moved in 1970 to the University of California, Santa Cruz to become a lecturer there. Later he taught at San Jose State University, where he became Professor Emeritus in 1989.

From April 1974 to November 1981 he was a member of the City Council ( City Council ) of Santa Cruz. During this time he held until the office of vice mayor and was eventually later in the year 1974 mayor. An office which he held until 1975. As a member of the City Council Muhly was the representative of his city at the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments and acted as such, once as president of the organization.

Muhly was a staunch opponent of the Nicaraguan Contra movement in the 1980s. So he traveled many times to Nicaragua, including once to relief supplies to Jinotepe, a sister city of Santa Cruz, to deliver. Together with his wife he was a co-founder of the nonprofit organization Three Americas, employing for the support of communities in Central and South America.

Muhly was married since 16 October 1946. He had met his future wife in 1944 at Bergstrom Field in Austin, Texas when he was stationed there as a weather technician of the Army Air Force. The marriage produced five children. Muhly died on 16 December 2011 at the age of 88 from heart failure.
