Berthold, Margrave of Baden

Berthold, Margrave of Baden, actually Berthold Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst August Heinrich Karl von Baden ( born February 24, 1906 in Karlsruhe, † October 27, 1963 at Spaichingen ) was from 1928 to 1963 head of the house of Baden.

Life

Berthold was the only son of the last Chancellor of the German Empire, Prince Maximilian of Baden (1867-1929), and his wife Marie -Luise of Hanover Cumberland (1879-1948), daughter of Ernst August, Prince of Hanover and Princess Thyra of Denmark.

On August 8, 1927 Berthold of Frederick II and his wife Hilda was adopted. This was due to the fact that had remained childless marriage of the former Grand Duke. The house assets would otherwise be dropped after his death, according to the settlement agreement of May 7, 1919, the Republic of Baden, because it was hereditary only in the marital male line of the grand ducal house.

Berthold married on August 17, 1931 in Constance Theodora Princess of Greece ( 1906-1969 ), a daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg and therefore a sister of the British Prince Consort Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh. The marriage produced three children:

  • Margaret Alice Thyra Viktoria Marie Louise Scholastica (1932-2013)
  • Maximilian Andreas Friedrich Gustav Ernst August Bernhard ( b. 1933 )
  • Ludwig Wilhelm Georg Ernst Christoph ( b. 1937 )

Berthold of Baden and Kurt Hahn

Tatiana Metternich reported on a visit Berthold von Baden at a reception of Hitler in 1933, who had the goal to stand up for Kurt Hahn:

" Although he detested Hitler by instinct, belief and tradition, he had come to gain permission to retain Dr. Hahn as head of the famous school in Salem, who had his father, Prince Max, who founded: his shy nature deceived about inner determination of time. He belonged to that classless, aristocracy of the sensitives, Considerate and Dashing ' who drew his strength from the special attachment to their soil. The Nazis were as incomprehensible as those them. Every moment of this interview was distasteful to him, but Prince Berthold remained determined to get through it. Unhappily he used with respect to tap the traditional phrase, 'He is our house very connected ' That gave Hitler the pretext on which he had been waiting for.. Those present were now witnesses one of those public ungoverned ( or intended ) tantrums:

Prince Berthold, pale with anger and disgust, only tried to defend its position, but when he realized how futile it was, he turned on his heel and left. From then on he did everything to bring his protege from the country, and to create new opportunities in England. There Hahn founded the school of Gordonstoun. "
