Berthun of Sussex

Berthun (also Berhthun, Beorhthun, Bercthun; † 686 ) was the ruler of 680er years of Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Sussex.

Life

To 682 raided Caedwalla, an exiled member of the royal house of Wessex, with his army Sussex. King Æthelwalh fell during the fighting and Sussex was looted. The fight against the conquerors of Wessex translated then Æthelwalhs successor, the ealdormen Berthun and Andhun to continue. You could Caedwalla sell first and reigned jointly over Sussex. Presumably dominated Andhun East Sussex, during Berthun reigned in West Sussex.

To 684/685 to Eadric and his uncle Hlothhere, king of Kent must have fallen out because Eadric went to Sussex, where he mobilized troops against Hlothhere, whom he defeated in a battle on 6 February 685. Hlothhere yet succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield. Eadric was then succeeded him as king of Kent.

Around the year 685/686 Caedwalla scored a devastating counter-attack at the Berthun was killed and Sussex again under the rule of Wessex came. Initially ruled by the kings of Wessex, Caedwalla and Ine, apparently directly. After Bishop Wilfrid had left at 686 Sussex was under the Church of Sussex Hædde, the Bishop of Winchester ( Wessex ). 692 Before sat Ine Watt and his relatives Nothhelm a ( = Nunna ) as the dependent of Wessex under kings.
