Betancuria

Betancuria, in the west of belonging to Spain Canary Island Fuerteventura, one of the six municipalities of the island. The city Betancuria as their administrative center is considered the most historically important city of Fuerteventura. The municipality is with 811 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) the bevölkerungsschwächste the island.

History

Betancuria was in 1404 by the conqueror Jean de Bethencourt, whose name it bears, and founded his companion Gadifer de la Salle. Since its inception, it was the capital and administrative center of the island. In 1834 it was replaced by Antigua, since 1860 Puerto de Cabras, today's Puerto del Rosario island's capital.

The church Betancuria was built in 1410 and converted in 1424 to the first cathedral of the Canary Islands. In the same year founded the bishopric of Betancuria, just as the first of the islands. Although the location of the place was deliberately chosen in the mountains, it always came back to serious attacks by pirates. 1593, the church was severely affected in the attack of the barbarian hordes of Xabán Arráez affected and was then rebuilt in the 17th century in its current form again. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the population which is now three-nave church one of the most beautiful churches of Fuerteventura has remained.

Located next to the picturesque courtyard of the church is located in an old mansion, the restaurant Casa Santa Maria.

In the village the Casa Museo de Betancuria, a kind of local history museum located next to the Museo Sacro Arto. Before the door of which is also the captured cannon of the Battle of Tuineje from 1734.

At the northern end of the village there is the Convento de Buenaventura. The former Franciscan monastery, from which the island was evangelized, 1835 resolved in the course of secularization and is today only a ruin.
