History

Since 1860, the former Puerto de Cabras (today's Puerto del Rosario ) island's capital. It replaced Antigua, it was only temporary since 1834. Before that it was since the Spanish conquest by Jean de Bethencourt Betancuria. The name of Puerto del Rosario has only existed since the 1950s. The name of Puerto de Cabras (Goat port) was in Puerto del Rosario ( Port of Rosary ), according to the church in the place, renamed. The valley south of the capital is called even today Barranco de Cabras.

Established the place was only in the 18th century. Before, no one lived here on the coast for fear of pirates. Towards the end of the 19th century ensured English merchants for the first prosperity of the city. It started trading with burnt lime on the island. In addition, on Fuerteventura, the fuel was scarce, so English coal was imported. Another trade was made with the grown on the island of cochineal louse. She gave the coveted red dye carmine. With the new commercial port Puerto de Cabras quickly became the largest town on the island. Towards the beginning of the 20th century, the heyday of this harbor town, however, was already over. In the 1930s, Fuerteventura had become a place of exile. 1924 banished to the Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno to Puerto de Cabra. After four months, but he escaped with the help of others to France.

Today, Puerto del Rosario is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality and at the same time the entire island of Fuerteventura. There is a museum in the building, in which the writer Miguel de Unamuno lived. There it is shown how life at this time has been on Fuerteventura.

Traffic

Just south of the capital is the international Fuerteventura Airport (Aeropuerto del Matorral ). Here scheduled and charter flights to many European countries are handled. Also, here operate regional aircraft to the neighboring islands.

The occasion was the new direct ferry service to the Moroccan port of Tarfaya, which has been operated since 2008 by the shipping company Naviera Armas.
