Beulah is a city of Mercer County in the U.S. state of North Dakota.

Geography

Beulah is located at 47 ° 16'5 " north latitude and 101 ° 46'38 " west longitude. At a distance of around 90 kilometers, the state capital of Bismarck is located in a south-easterly direction. The Lake Sakakawea is 25 kilometers to the north, Interstate 94- Highway, about 50 kilometers south of the city.

History

The city was founded in 1913 and was named after Beulah Stinchcombe, the niece of a businessman working in the local land development. In the area of lignite was ( Beulah lignite ) found and removed, which is also used in a 1984 put into operation coal gasification plant ( Great Plains Synfuels Plant). Main employer in the town is still the Dakota Gasification Company, the plant operator. Because of these and other energy companies Beula is sometimes given the nickname " Energy Capital of North Dakota ."
