Bhagwan Das

Bhagavan Das ( born January 12, 1869 in Varanasi, India, † September 18, 1958 ) was an Indian politician, theosophist and scholar.

Bhagavan Das was born in 1869 in a wealthy merchant family. He has already achieved in 1888 with 19 years of the Master of Arts in Philosophy. Attracted by a speech Annie Besant in 1894, he joined the Theosophical Society (TG ) with and followed by cleavage of the TG 1895 the Theosophical Society Adyar ( Adyar -TG). In July 1898, he was (now Varanasi ) involved in the founding of the Theosophical Central Hindu College in Benares.

Within the Adyar TG he was an opponent of the cult of Jiddu Krishnamurti and of the resulting Order of the Star in the East, which was operated by a leader Annie Besant and Charles W. Leadbeater. At times, he led the Adyar - TG is the Indian section.

This supported the campaign of non-cooperation, which einbegriff boycott the products resulting inter alia from the Central Hindu College Banaras Hindu University, and was at that time an important politician of the Indian National Congress ( INC). He was chairman of the provincial committee of the INC for the United Provinces and member of the All- India Congress Committee. In 1955 he was awarded for his contribution to the Indian education system and of the Indian literature with the Bharat Ratna.

Bhagavan Das died on 18 September 1958. Honor of his 100th birthday dedicated to him, the Indian Post a remembrance stamp.
