Biagio Abrate

Biagio Abrate ( born November 8, 1949 in Sant'Albano Stura, Piedmont ) is an Italian retired general. From January 2011 to January 2013 he was Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces.

Military career

Abrate graduated from 1969 to 1974 from the Military Academy in Modena and Turin, and was an officer then platoon leader in the Alpini Battalion Bolzano Bressanone, South Tyrol. In 1975, he was transferred in Val Pusteria to Alpini Battalion Trento in Wels -Tesido. There he served as lieutenant and captain chief of a mortar and a mountain infantry company. From 1979, he served as an instructor at the Mountain Troops School in Aosta. From 1983 to 1984, from 1986 to 1987 graduated Abrate the General Staff of the Army training in Civitavecchia. By 1990, he was then working as a major and lieutenant colonel in the human resources in the Army General Staff in Rome. Abrate commanded from 1990 to 1992 the Alpini Battalion Bassano in San Candido, then he was until 1994 Chief of Staff of the Mountain Troops School in Aosta.

1994 Abrate was as head of the Military District Colonel Florence. From 1995 to 1996 he completed a course at the Staff College of the Armed Forces in Rome, after which he headed until 1998, a unit within the office of the defense minister. 1998 Abrate was deputy commander of the Alpini Brigade Taurinense in Turin, in 1999 as a brigadier general then commander of the brigade. With the staff of Taurinense he led from July to November 2000, the Multinational Brigade West KFOR in Peć, Kosovo. Between November 2000 and July 2001, he was Chief of Staff of the Mountain Troops command in Bolzano.

In July 2001, Abrate Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Minister of Defence, in February 2006, then Chief of Cabinet. In both of these roles, he served until 2010, ministers who belonged to both center-right and center-left coalitions. Abrate was promoted to Major General in January 2007 and early 2003, to lieutenant general. On 10 February 2010 Abrate Secretary-General and Deputy Ministers of Defense and thus also "National defense director ." End of November 2010 the Italian Council of Ministers designated him as the new chief of staff of the armed forces. Abrate took office on 18 January 2011 by General Vincenzo Camporini. On 31 January 2013, it was from Luigi Binelli Mantelli to Admiral and retired.

General Abrate has in addition to his military training, a Masters in Political Science ( University of Trieste ). He is a ski instructor and mountain guide. Abrate is married and has two sons.
