Bight of Bonny

Map of the Gulf of Guinea to the Bay of Bonny

W1

The Bay of Bonny ( Bight of Bonny ), formerly called Bight of Biafra, is a bay on the eastern end of the Gulf of Guinea. It follows up on the Bight of Benin, ranging from the delta of the River Niger to Cape Lopez in Gabon.

The coasts of the states in Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe and Gabon are located entirely or partially in the Bay of Bonny.

From 1849 to 1861 there was a British protectorate Bight of Biafra, which controlled the present-day Bay of Bonny.

The reason for the renaming of the Bay of Bight of Biafra in Bay of Bonny in 1972 by the government of Nigeria was the secession of the southeastern provinces of Nigeria under the name of Biafra 1967-1970. The victorious central government wanted to wipe out the concept of Biafra finally from the maps. The namesake of the bay since the city is Bonny in the Niger Delta.
