Bignan

Bignan ( Breton: Begnen ) is a commune with 2743 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region. It belongs to the Local Government Association, Saint -Jean- Brévelay Communauté.

Geography

Bignan located in the southern part of Brittany in the center of the department of Morbihan and belongs to the Pays de Pontivy.

Neighboring municipalities are Moréac and Saint- Allouestre in the north, Buléon in the northeast, Guéhenno the east and southeast, Saint -Jean- Brévelay in the south, Colpo in the southwest and Moustoir- Ac and Locminé in the West.

Through the village runs the D1 as a link from Guémené -sur -Scorff about Locminé after Péaule on the southern border of Brittany and the D10 of Plumelec after Malestroit. Important for inter-regional traffic is the N24 from Lorient to Rennes. This runs just north of the municipal boundary and a connection is ensured over Locminé.

Most important are the waters flow Claie, the creek and the pond Keriolas of Kergroix.

Demographics

History

The place is first mentioned in 1421 under the name Bingnen. In the time of the French Revolution it was a center of Chouannerie. The municipality belongs to the historic region of Brittany Bro - Gwened (French Vannetais ) and within this region to region Bro Baod (French Pays de Baud) and shares his story. From 1793 until its dissolution in 1801 Bignan was the capital of a canton of the same name. Since then, the church is assigned to the District of Saint -Jean- Brévelay. 1864 gave Bignan a part of his community area to the then newly founded community Colpo.
