Bill Ponsford

William Harold Ponsford MBE (* October 19, 1900 Melbourne, Australia, † April 6, 1991 in Kyneton, Australia) was an Australian cricketer. In 1935, he was voted one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year.

Career

Bill Ponsford played during his career total of 162 first-class cricket matches where he. 13,819 total runs scored ( 65.18 runs per wicket ) Most first-class matches he took for the team of Victoria. Two times he was able to improve the record for most runs scored in a first-class innings. The first record he set in February 1923 in a match against Tasmania, where he improved the previously existing record of 27 years Archie MacLaren of 424 to 429 runs. In 1927, he improved his own record with a match against Queensland, in which he scored 437 runs. This makes it next to Brian Lara Cricket is the only player to score at least 400 runs in two first-class matches. For the Australian Test Cricket Team Bill Ponsford played 29 matches in which he scored 2122 runs ( 48.22 runs per wicket ). His Test debut, he celebrated in December 1924 against England in Sydney. Its last use in a test had Ponsford against England in August 1934.
