Bindon Abbey ( Bindonium ) is a former Cistercian abbey and the river Frome about 1 km east of Wool in the district of Purbeck in Dorset, England.

History

The monastery was founded in 1149 donated by William de Glastonia in Little Bindon ( on the south coast of England between Weymouth and Poole) as a sister monastery of Forde Abbey, but the terrain proved too difficult, so that, by Robert de Newburgh and his wife in 1172, the laying inland took place after Wool. The monastery was very encouraged by the dynasty of Plantagenet and the abbot was used by King John to confidential missions. 1215 a part of the royal treasure was placed in Bindon. King Henry III. presented to the monastery repeated letters of protection and King Edward II drew on the support of the monastery for the wars against the Scots. In the 14th century there were internal difficulties for the monastery. 1535 the annual income of the monastery is rated 147 pounds in the Valor Ecclesiasticus; so that it fell under the first wave of resolution 1536, which was however averted by the payment of a sum of 300 pounds. However, the resolution was carried out in 1539 and the goods of the monastery received Lord Poynings. 1559 a mansion was built on the site of the monastery, but was burned down during the Civil War 100 years later. The stones were used for the construction of Lulworth Castle. 1794-1798 were built a little " gothic " mansion ( Bindon Abbey House ) and a gatehouse, both of which are still preserved.

Buildings and plant

The foundations of the monastery, the bernhardi African plan equaled ( cross-shaped, three-nave, in the east just closed church with two side chapels to the cross arms in the north, the retreat south - right - of them) are still partially present in considerable amount. From the chapter house in the east wing are still the shafts of the vault to see. From the south wing of the exam with the refectory and kitchen, little is preserved. The Mill on the north of the monastery flowing river Frome goes back to the monastery.
