BÃtov (Znojmo District)
Bítov ( German Bítov ) is a municipality in Okres Znojmo in the Czech Republic.
The place located in South Moravia has a two-part story. In the initial planning for the construction of the dam Frain an der Thaya Ing Ferdinand Schmidt three smaller dams had provided, which would have spared Bítov. Later, however, he came to the conclusion that only a single large dam could solve the task perfectly, even if it means the place Bítov had to be sacrificed. Therefore, a new Bítov was built on the plateau above the Thaya Valley.
Probably derived the name " Bítov " from the Latin Vetus Via and later Vetovia. The name Old Bítov ( Stary Bítov ) and New Bítov (Novy Bítov ) are not official - it is still on the maps only Bítov ( Bítov ) - but are sometimes used even on Czech websites.
Old Bítov
The Bítov castle is first mentioned about 1060. Around this time is probably also in the Valley of the Schelletau ( Želetavka ), a tributary of the River Thaya, situated village Bítov have been founded.
1780, who was born on December 26, 1751 Klemens Maria Hofbauer applying for the position as a hermit in Bítov. His application is rejected, however.
On July 8, 1925 Born in Bítov Richard Georg Plaschka. The historian is from 1958-1988 Head of the Austrian East and Southeast Europe Institute and 1967-1988 Professor of East European History at the University of Vienna.
New Bítov
Simultaneously with the construction of the dam in Frain an der Thaya also New Bítov is built (Novy Bítov ). Of the houses and the church of Old Bítov but only the stone walls remain standing.
For obvious reasons, the planners of new Bítov do not work to customize each of the newly built houses. And so you recognize the houses from this period on their uniform appearance.
Around 1933, with the beginning of the full staues of the dam, the last Old - Vöttauer need to move to New Bítov.
For a long time still remembers the protruding from the water tower of the Trinity Chapel at the buried village. Today Bítov has 146 inhabitants (1 January 2013).
Thaya there is one of many campsites in the region and in Bítov itself for some years a museum for veteran cars. Nearby are the ruins of the castle Zornstein.
