Idea and History

The American chess player Armand Edward Blackmar designed the plan to procure by the pawn sacrifice e2- e4 followed by f2 -f3 White open lines and lead in development. The Polish champions Ignacy Popiel resorted to the not yet fully developed ideas of Blackmar and added in the third train the Zwischenzug 3 Nb1 - c3 added. However, he did not play Gambit, but recover by 4 Lc1 - g5 farmers. Only Emil Joseph Diemer Gambit Blackmar combined with the Popiels knight move and created the Blackmar - Diemer Gambit. He taught with the name of Gambit only indirectly related. Instead, for the first time wrote Max Euwe in 1951 in chess archive from the " Blackmar - Diemer Gambit ." Until that time, the gambit was still known as " Blackmar Gambit ".

Diemer was not going to let it get to the final because it "From the first train on Matt" expressed the aggressive style of play. In fact, the Blackmar - Diemer Gambit offers a wealth of tactical highly complicated variants. Very often acquired on white - light passing - Black inaccuracies successful mating attack. Failure to do so is often a perpetual check in reserve; White fails but, as he is generally tangible as far behind, that he may give up before the final. The draw is rather the exception.

Review and Practice

On the question of whether the BDG is correct, so the compensation to the farmers at least outweighs are the ghosts until today. At Master level, it is hardly played since the opinion prevails, when correctly counterplay Black White would receive enough compensation for the pawn and would therefore at a disadvantage. This is countered by the excellent results for white where the BDG is still played - about two -thirds of all recorded as opened tournament games were wins for White. However, this is not a direct proof of the goodness of the system, because very often in this opening of his white opponent theory of knowledge far superior. Also incorrect, but traps Manifold variants lead a majority to win. In games between first-class and peer players black creates contrast often successful defense and subsequent utilization of the extra pawn. However, a definitive refutation of the whole system is not known. In blitz chess, especially on the Internet, the BDG is very popular and promising for players of all degrees of strength.

The followers of gambits have trained in the past a strong life of its own with separate journals and topics tournaments. In the years 1968-1975 and from 1979 to 1983 's " BDG Correspondence Chess World Tournaments " were held. Diemer and other players, such as Georg Studier, Uwe Stapelfeldt and Gerhart Gunderam, explored variations in correspondence chess tournaments topic.

Important variants

  • Continuations as 4 ... c7 - c6, c7 - c5 4 ..., 4 ... e6 e7, c6 - 4 ... Sb8 result in rejection of Gambit, which White can win back the farmers usually (if he wants it).
  • On 4 ... e4 -e3 5 Lc1xe3 is recommended, after which White has regained the farmers. It takes the missing White Springer Field on f3 in purchase to have won a pace for a possible later attack on the kingside.
  • After 4 ... Bc8 - f5, White can by 5 f3xe4 continue to play a gambit, or recapture by g2 - g4 5 Bf5 g6 - g5 6 g4 Nf6 -d5 7 Sc3xe4 the farmers, but the pawn structure on kingside is weakened.

Adoption of Gambit

  • 4 ... e4xf3 is the assumption Gambit, after which the two main continuations 5 Sg1xf3 and 5 Dd1xf3 exist. Both lead to sharp play. After 5 Sg1xf3 are 5 ... Bc8 - e6 and 5 ... h7 - h5 are rare and largely unexplored in the tournament practice. Contrast, was 5 ... Bc8 - f5 subject of extensive investigations mainly by Diemer, study and Gunderam.
  • Through the Ryder Gambit 5 Dd1xf3 offers white to a second pawn. Black can reject these or after 5 ... Dd8xd4 6 Lc1 -e3 play with two extra pawns against strong white attack. The quality gain 6 ... Dd4 - b4? 7 0-0-0 Bc8 - g4? loses due 8 Nc3 b5! .
