Blagoy Blagoev

Blagoj Blagoev ( Bulgarian Благой Благоев; born December 4, 1956) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter. He was winner of the silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and multiple world champion.

Sporting career

Blagoj Blagoev was one of the Bulgarian weightlifters who began due to intensive and systematic talent search by the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation at the age of 12 years with the weight lifting. After an extensive basic training these young weightlifters were relatively quickly introduced through intensive and rigorous training, which was designed by the then Bulgarian coach Ivan Abadschiew, a world leader and had mostly achieved this before the age of 20. This was the case even when Blagoj Blagoev, who joined to hedge his living as a sports soldier army.

This started in 1975 for the first time at an international championship, the Junior World Championship in Marseille in the light heavyweight division to 82.5 kg, and there finished behind compatriot Belichowski with 327.5 kg in single combat the 2nd place. In 1976 he then started very successfully with the seniors. He won at the European Championships in Berlin (East) in a light heavyweight at 365 kg in the silver medal behind Valeri Shari from the Soviet Union, who scored 367.5 kg. At the Olympic Games the same year in Montreal, he reached in a duel 362.5 kg and thus won the Olympic silver medal, again behind Shari, who came to 365 kg. But Blagojews drug test was positive, and he was disqualified. He also received a competition suspension of one year.

After this lock Blagoj Blagoev could go back in 1977 at the World and European Championships in Stuttgart at the start. He managed there in the snatch 155 kg, which he finished in 2nd place in both the world - as well as at the European Championships. However, in thrusting he succeeded not a valid test, so that he remained unplaziert in the duel championship.

In 1978 he competed in any international championship. 1979 and 1980 he was very successful in the light heavyweight division. At the European Championships 1979 in Varna him thereby achieved his first major victory. With 380 kg in the fight he was European champion. However, at the World Championships the same year in Salonika he just lifted 362.5 kg in single combat and was thus beaten by Jurik Wardanjan from the Soviet Union, which reached 370 kg.

At the Olympic Games in 1980 it reached 372.5 kg, leading to a silver medal behind Jurik Vardanyan, who scored 400.0 kg in single combat, ranged in the light heavyweight division.

In 1981 Blagoj Blagoev started a weight class higher in the Medium weight up to 90 kg. In 1981 he was in Lille with 405.0 kg in single combat world and European champions before the Soviet lifter Yuri Sacharewitsch, who lifted 397.5 kg. In 1982 he was again in Ljubljana world and European champions, where he increased his duel power to 415.0 kg and thus Jurik Vardanyan, who lifted 395.0 kg outclassed. In 1983, he was then in Moscow in a duel for the third time world and European champions in a row, scoring 420.0 kg in the total. Second place went to Victor Solodow from the Soviet Union with 410.0 kg.

Solodow defeated then at the European Championships in 1984 in Vitoria- Gasteiz in Spain with Blagoev 420 kg to 417.5 kg in single combat, with his victory he could only by a world record in collision with 232.5 kg safe. This was the last launch of Blagoj Blagoev on the international stage lift. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he was unable to attend because of the boycott of the Games by his country.

Throughout his career, Blagoj Blagoev achieved several world records, most of them in the snatch and the rest of the duel. In thrusting he could lay down a world record throughout his career.

About the further life of Blagoj Blagoev is only known that he went to the end of the communist era in Bulgaria with other Bulgarian weightlifters (eg Stefan Botev ) to Australia.
