After the separation from Capitol Records in 1999 and a self-financed European tour, the band saved the money from record sales and part-time jobs in order to record the next album on their own costs. The musicians took a lot of time for the songwriting and met every artistic decision together. The lyrics of the album are partly autobiographical content. The basic idea of the respective pieces came mostly from Jim Adkins, who introduced them to the rest of the band. Together with producer Mark Trombino the songs were completed. For the title track during a sold-out show of the band in their hometown of Tempe ( Arizona) was recorded a music video.

The finished album was sent to various record labels. In addition, various radio stations received a promo single with three pieces. Therefore, the first songs were played on the radio already, even before a new record contract could be completed. Also because of this airplay DreamWorks Records signed the band under contract. The label launched an extensive marketing campaign. For a professional title track video was shot and DreamWorks sent promotion teams, which competed for the album in public. About the website of the band an exclusive pre-release single was distributed, which was sold out within days. In addition, a website has been switched specially for the sale of the album, on which an Enhanced CD was distributed, which, inter alia, contained a link to exclusive video footage on the hinge side.

The album was later renamed Jimmy Eat World because of the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001. The album sold in the U.S. alone so far more than 1.3 million times.

On 28 April 2008 a deluxe edition of the album with a bonus CD with several B-sides, acoustic versions, live versions, demos and previously unreleased tracks was released. The Deluxe Edition was given its original title Bleed American.
