Boëge

Boëge is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the capital of the canton Boëge in the Arrondissement of Thonon- les- Bains.

Geography

Boëge is located at 738 m above sea level. M., about 20 km east of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located in the Vallée Verte in an open valley widening, which is drained by the Menoge, at the eastern foot of the mountain range Les Voirons in the northwestern Savoy Alps.

The area of ​​16.00 km ² municipal area includes a section of the Vallée Verte. The dewatered by the Menoge valley is oriented in the direction northeast-southwest and has a Boëge at more than 1 km wide flat valley floor. Neighboring communities of Boëge are Bons- en- Chablais and Saxel in the north, Burdignin and Villard in the east, Bogève and Saint -André -de- Boëge in the south and Cranves-Sales and Saint- Cergues in the West.

History

Boëge mentioned in documents in the 12th century under the name Boatium. It was in 1860 the capital of the newly created Canton Boëge, the Arrondissement of Bonneville joined the Arrondissement of Thonon- les- Bains in 1939.

Attractions

Worth seeing are the village church in the Gothic Flamboyant style and the Monastère de Bethléem on the eastern slopes of Les Voirons.

Population

With 1731 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Boëge one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region. A continuous strong growth of the population since the mid- 1970s has been recorded thanks to the beautiful residential area. Outside of the old village created numerous houses.

Economy and infrastructure

Boëge was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture and forestry village. Today there are various businesses of the local small and medium enterprises. Many working population commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Geneva - Annemasse, their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares of a link road from Thonon -les- Bains on the Col de Cou after Fillinges. Further road links exist with Bons- en- Chablais (via the Col de Saxel ) and with Burdignin.
