Bombino (musician)

Bombino ( Omara Moctar or actually Goumar Almoctar, born January 1, 1980 in Tidene, today Dabaga, Niger ) is a Nigerien guitarist and singer who mixes the traditional music of the Tuareg with elements of rock music and the blues.

Life

Bombino was born in the valley Tidene, northeast of the city of Agadez, the son of a car mechanic and a housewife. He grew up in the area of Agadez and was educated Muslim. When it came to the Tuareg rebellion in the early 1990 's, the family fled to Algeria Tamanrasset to relatives and returned in 1993 back after Niger in democratic elections had taken place. There he was given a guitar by his uncle, took lessons and played against the will of his father in a band. His fellow musicians gave him the nickname Bombino made ​​of Italian Bambino (German boy ) derived, as he was the youngest member of the band.

Published in 2004, Bombino his first album, Agamgam. As a member of the band Tidawt he played 2007 concerts in California. The group also took part in the recording of a song for the CD Stones World by Tim Ries and played it along with several members of the Rolling Stones. A concert that he played in the same year in Agadez with other musicians as Group Bombino was taken by Hisham Mayet, an employee of the record label Sublime Frequencies from Seattle, and published with additional recordings in the United States in 2009.

When it again came to unrest of the Tuareg in Niger in 2007, Bombino first fought on the side of the rebels, but then went into exile in Burkina Faso. There he met filmmaker Ron Wyman 2009, the filmed the documentary Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion on Bombino and allowed him to record his second album Agadez in the United States.
