Boone Lake

Boone Lake is a reservoir in Sullivan and Washington counties in northeast Tennessee.

It was created by the damming of the South Fork Holston River above the Boone Dam.

The dam is located 31 km before the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork Holston River. The Watauga River flowed directly above the dam in the South Fork Holston River.

The dam is operated by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA ). It is used for power generation and flood protection. The lake has a water area of 18 km ² and a retention volume of 93,534,000 m³. The water level of the lake fluctuates throughout the year by 6 m.

The lake offers a swimming area and a dock for boats. Water skiing and fishing are popular activities on Boone Lake. You can fish in the lake smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and striped bass. It is warned of the excessive consumption of catfish and carp caught due to elevated PCB and chlordane concentrations.

Dam and reservoir are named after Daniel Boone (1734-1820), who explored the area in the 1760s.
