Borba blanca

Borba blanca is a white, high-yielding indigenous grape of Spain, which is specially grown in the southwest of the country in Extremadura. In the wines of the Denomination of Origin (DO) Ribera del Guadiana is one of the authorized varieties, where it is mainly used for blending.

Not to be confused is the sort Borba Blanca with a new breed created in Portugal named Borba, which got its name from the town of Borba.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The large leaves are almost pentagonal, three-to five-lobed and only weakly sinuate ( see also the article sheet form). The petiole is lyres - shaped open. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are set closely compared to other varieties.

The vigorous variety produces consistently high yields, so that targeted a reduction in yield vine training should be conducted in order to achieve good quality wines. Borba blanca is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ).
