Bordeaux Cathedral

The Saint- André Cathedral is a religious building in Bordeaux (France), which serves the Archdiocese of Bordeaux as a seat. The cultural monument was classified as a monument historique in 1862 and, as such, a protected monument.

Description

The cathedral is 124 m long, 18 m wide at the transept, 23 meters height in the nave and 29 meters height in the choir of the largest and most important religious building of the city of Bordeaux. The mainly Gothic building ( end of 12th century to 15th century) extended a Romanesque church, of which the western nave is still preserved. The Consecration of the previous building was made in 1096 by Pope Urban II. During this cathedral in 1137 found the weddings of Eleanor of Aquitaine with Louis VII and in 1615 that of Louis XIII. Anne of Austria.

The nave is a single-nave hall church, which is surprising for a building of this size, but in western France frequently encountered (see the cathedrals of Angers and Le Mans). The outer walls still date from the Romanesque church, the vault but from the late Gothic period. The indentation has buttress attached to the sides of the building.

The west facade is entirely unadorned and has no portal system. On the north side of the nave is the built in 1250 Gothic royal portal.

In 1280 the construction of a new cathedral began with an ambulatory with chapels in the forms the northern French Gothic. The transept is excellent at both ends by two-tower facade, which makes up for the barren western front.

The north portal of the beginning of the 14th century shows a rich sculptural decoration with figures of the Archbishops of Bordeaux. It is surmounted by two 81 meter high towers with pointed Gothic tower towers. Around 1350 the Gothic building was completed, a new building of the nave was obviously not intended.

In the 15th century the north transept Rose got a new flamboyant tracery, on the other hand Südquerhausrose preserves the tracery of the 14th century.

During the French Revolution the interior was destroyed, converted the cathedral itself in a barn.

The cathedral stands since 1998 as part of the " Camino de Santiago in France " on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.

The choir on the south side is the isolated bell tower Pey Berland - upstream, which dates from the years 1440-66 and was named after the bishop Pey Berland -. 1863, the 50 meter high tower was increased by the statue of Notre- Dame d' Aquitaine.

Organ

Since 1982, Saint -André has a new organ, as the famous organ has recovered from 1748 by Dom Bedos de Celles their rightful place in the church of Sainte- Croix. The instrument was built by the organ builder Danion -Gonzalez. It has 76 registers, four manuals and pedal. The Spieltrakturen are electro-pneumatic, the Registertrakturen electrically.
