Borough tube station

Borough is an underground station of the London Underground in the historic center of the district London Borough of Southwark. It is located in the Travelcard Zone 1, at the junction of Borough High Street and Marshalsea Road. In the year 2011 there were 4.57 million passengers these of the Northern Line station.

The station on December 18, 1890 was opened by the City and South London Railway (now the City branch of the Northern Line ), as part of the first electrically powered subway line in the world. The route then led by Stockwell to King William Street. The latter station was closed on February 24, 1900 after commissioning of a new line to Moorgate.

During the Second World War, the district administration of Southwark built a part of the disused tunnels between Borough and the south bank of the Thames to the air raid shelter. He had six inputs along Borough High Street and was from June 1940 to May 1945 in use. From 16 July 1922 to 23 February 1925, the Borough station was closed. During this time, advanced the tunnel profile in order to increase capacity. Another closure took place in 1999 between July 2 and September 5 in order to renew all track and signaling systems can.
