Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg

The Botanical Garden Munich- Nymphenburg, also New Botanical Garden, connects to the Nymphenburg Park to the north and covers an area of 21.20 hectares and over 400,000 visitors a year, one of the largest botanical gardens in Germany. He now belongs to the State Natural History Collections in Bavaria.

History

1809 saw the founding of the first botanical garden in Munich, designed by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell and under the direction of Francis of Paula cabinet. The remains of this plant, now known as Old Botanical Garden, located near the busy Charles Square in the city center.

1914 was created in Nymphenburg, among other things, due to the urban growth and the associated air pollution of the New Botanic Garden in front of the then outskirts of Munich. On the initiative of Karl Ritter von Goebel this planned the new garden along with the landscape architect Holfelder. Goebel was the first director of the Botanical Garden, Nymphenburg. From 1972 to 1988 Franz Schötz was director.

Since 1966, the New Botanical Garden, the spa located on the same premises Botanical State Collection and the Institute of Systematic Botany, Ludwig- Maximilians- University are conducted in personal union. Current director is Susanne S. Renner.

Facilities

In the Botanical Garden about 14,000 plant species are cultivated on around 18 hectares. In the permanent collection of over 4,500 square meters of greenhouses plants from humid tropical regions, kühltropischer mountain forests and deserts have their place.

Further facilities include a Schmuckhof, the rhododendron grove, the Arboretum and the alpine garden on a small lake, which is known as the Big Pond. Together with his external station, the Alpine Garden on Schachen ( 1,860 m), the establishment also serves research and teaching.

During the winter months from December to March exotic butterflies have been held for several years as a special exhibition in a tropical greenhouse. Over 400 different species of butterflies fly freely in the warm greenhouse number 4, that a tropical rainforest simulated.

Every year in July the Botanical Garden offers a (sales) rose show on in and around the Great greenhouse.

In the center of the park at the Rose Garden, there is a self-service café.

Access

Visitors can reach the Munich Botanic Garden of the North ( tram ) or from the south via a direct path from the Nymphenburg Park. It is charged admission, while in winter only when entering the greenhouses.
