Viniculture

The municipality is the eponymous wine region with the status of an AOC (since 31 July 1937) his name. On an area of 1368 acres, located north of the eight municipalities Benais, Bourgueil, Chouzé -sur -Loire, Ingrandes -de -Touraine, La Chapelle- sur -Loire, Restigné, Saint -Nicolas -de- Bourgueil and Saint -Patrice spread of the Loire, a portion of the Loire wine region is in the western part of the Touraine region, grown almost exclusively red wine from the Cabernet Franc. To a maximum of ten percent, the use of the variety Cabernet Sauvignon is permitted. The statutory income is limited to 55 hl / ha, but can be increased in bad wine years up to 67 hl / ha.

Like the wines of Chinon, a wine-growing village of about 10 km, is located south of the Loire, and the local wines are quite tannic. Especially when the grapes grow on slopes on tuff, the wines are vinified from them expandable and durable in good years. This is particularly true for the vintages 1976, 1989 and 1990. Plants that thrive on a sand and gravel bottom, on the other hand result in only moderate, but fruity wines.

In the year 2002 69.500 hl of red wine and a few hundred hectoliters rosé were expanded. The few white wines do not fall under the provisions of the AOC.

The local wines have been praised by writers Pierre de Ronsard and François Rabelais.
