Braunschweig (region)

The county of Brunswick was the smallest administrative district of Lower Saxony. It was created in 1978 from the former county of Brunswick and dissolved in 2004. In 1978, the government district enlarged considerably, were added when large parts of the dissolved government district of Hildesheim.

Brunswick County (1946-1978)

Within the country, Lower Saxony, the area of the former Free State of Brunswick was continued as one of eight administrative districts under the name Brunswick County.

It included the cities of Braunschweig, Goslar and Salzgitter ( the name of this city was initially Watenstedt -Salzgitter ) and the counties of Brunswick, Gander Home, Goslar, Helmstedt, Wolfenbüttel, and the district of Blankenburg ( whose new county seat Brown location in the resin ).

For the district Braunschweig belonged until then and even after the formation of the Brunswick County to 1972 around 150 km from lying exclave Thedinghausen in Verden. Since 1972, this area belongs to the district of Verden.

The county with the cities Goslar Goslar and Salzgitter had come until 1941 in exchange for the previously Brunswick County Holzminden of the Prussian province of Hanover ( Regierungsbezirk of Hildesheim) at that country Brunswick. A year later the city Watenstedt -Salzgitter from altbraunschweigischen and formerly Prussian ( Province of Hanover ) part of a territory was newly formed.

Braunschweig Region (1978-2004)

In the course of administrative reform Braunschweig Region came to the county, now part of the dissolved government district of Hildesheim and of the administrative district of Lüneburg added.

On 31 December 2004, the Region of Braunschweig, as well as the other three Lower Saxony government districts abolished and their agencies, the district governments resolved. Instead of the government agency established in 2005 in 2014 Regional Adviser were appointed for the territory of the former government district Braunschweig within the limits of 1978-2004.

Today's counties have received through the district reform, which was carried out in Lower Saxony essentially 1973-1977, its present form, however, go back to counties that existed before the district reform.

Head of agency

Authority of the county was until 1977 the President of the Lower Saxony Brunswick County with an equally marked "Administration President " (VP) as a conductor. From 1978 until its dissolution in late 2004, the district government of Braunschweig was the authority of the government district, with a Government Minister ( RP) as a conductor.
